H.E. MR. I GUSTI AGUNG WESAKA PUJA

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Indonesia to the Republic of Austria, Republic of Slovenia and Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other International Organisations in Vienna

Mr. I Gusti Agung Wesaka Puja was appointed as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Indonesia to the Republic of Austria, Republic of Slovenia and Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other International Organisations in Vienna and arrived in Vienna in March 2010.Mr. I Gusti Agung Wesaka Puja has been involved in multilateral forums throughout his diplomatic career.

Prior to his current assignment in Vienna, he served as Ambassador/Deputy Permanent Representative of the Republic of Indonesia to the UN bodies, WTO and other International Organisations based in Geneva, Switzerland (2006-2009). He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia in 1986.

His first assignment was at the Embassy/Permanent Mission of the Republic of Indonesia in Vienna (1992-1996). He was a Counsellor at the Indonesian Permanent Mission in Geneva (1998-2002). He was subsequently appointed as Director for Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia in 2002 and served until 2006.

In addition to his work in multilateral forums, he was also involved continuously in the five-year long Aceh Peace Process (2000-2005). He was a member of the Indonesian negotiating team to the signing of the Humanitarian Pause (Geneva, 2000) and Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (Geneva, 2002) facilitated by the Center for Humanitarian Dialogue, as well as the Helsinki Memorandum of Understanding (2005) facilitated by the Crisis Management Initiative (CMI) led by former Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari.

In 2004, he was appointed as a member of the Special Envoy Team of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, which was led by former Indonesian Foreign Minister, the late Mr. Ali Alatas. He holds a bachelor degree from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences of Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta (1985) and a Master of Arts degree from the Horrace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA (1991).

He was awarded the Satya Lencana Dharma Nusa Award (2006) for his role in the Aceh Peace Process and the Satya Lencana Karya Satya 20-Year Service Award (2007) from the Government of the Republic of Indonesia. He was born in Bali on 11 January 1962 and is married with two sons. His hobbies include tennis, badminton, traditional Balinese dances, Javanese gamelan and classical music.
